FAQ
What is IPL Hair Removal
IPL stands for intense pulse light. It consists of a beam of light that targets the melanin in the hair shaft. Energy from the beam of light is converted to heat, which disables the hair follicular cells responsible for hair growth. Intense pulsed light (known as IPL but mistakenly referred to as a laser) systems emit powerful pulses of filtered light that penetrate into the hair to penetrate melanin and over time, fade the hair.
To achieve long-term hair reduction, this procedure heats up the hair and destroys the cells responsible for hair growth. On the market, there are many systems marketed as IPL machines, yet many don't use the trademarked technology of IPL and work on other theories, so the results aren't consistent.
How do hair removal treatments work?
In order to do this, we usually have to shave off the hair above the skin (on your first hair removal session, we may ask you to shave approx three days prior so we can see the area without having a thick growth of hair). IPL is then applied to the skin with a handpiece which emits pulses of light to disable unwanted hair. After the treatment, the remaining hair will fall out over the next two weeks and for up to 30 days.
How many treatments will I require?
The number of treatments needed will vary based on an individual's condition and the area being treated. For most people, eight to ten sessions are needed to permanently reduce hair in the bikini or underarm area and clients are amazed with the results after one treatment. There are a number of factors that come into play with the number of treatments, including your hair color, skin tone, hormone levels, hair follicle size and hair cycle.
Do you recommend alternate hair removal treatments to someone who has been waxing for a while?
Shaving, plucking, waxing, and depilatory creams are traditional methods for hair removal that only provide temporary relief from hair growth. With intense light hair removal, unwanted body hair can be safely removed without damaging the skin's delicate pores and structure.
Is there anything I should do after treatments?
Protect your skin from the sun after treating it with sunblock of SPF 30 or more. During the first few days after treatment, avoid scrubbing or rinsing the treated areas with abrasive skin cleaners; don't use glycolic acid or Vitamin A products for approximately 48 hours after treatment. Your Therapist will also provide you with any additional precautions and a post-IPL care sheet.
Can any part of the body be treated?
Treatment can be performed on nearly any part of the body, but we most commonly treat the legs, back, back of the neck, upper lip, chin, underarms, stomach, bikini line, face, chest, etc.
Do you treat facial hair for polycystic ovaries?
Hirsutism (excessive hair growth on the face and body) is an unwanted effect of Polycystic ovaries. Yes, IPL is capable of removing facial hair caused by this condition. Before treatment, make sure your Therapist is aware if you have polycystic ovaries.
What does the treatment feel like?
IPL may cause a slight tingling or pinch (similar to snapping a rubber band), however most people cope very well with this procedure. Tingling may be more noticeable in patients with thicker and darker hair.
How long do the treatments take?
In some cases, we can treat certain areas within 15 minutes. On the other hand, treatment of the back or legs can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.
How do I know if it’s right for me?
The treatment should be completely comfortable for you. People with light skin and dark hair are ideal candidates for IPL hair removal. There is no reason to assume that only people with very light skin and dark hair will achieve satisfactory results. People with at least some melanin in their hair can be treated. During the consultation, the IPL Therapist will determine your skin type using the Fitzpatrick scale and will develop a specific treatment plan based on your skin type and hair colour.
A patch test can be done at our clinic, please contact us for more information.
What will I see after my hair removal treatment?
Depending on an individual, heat can damage hair follicles, but the hairs remain in the follicles. Within one to three weeks, the hair will fall out. During this time, the hairs will appear to grow as they are pushed out by the new epidermis.
After treatment, the treated area typically experiences some mild redness and tenderness. Typically, this will subside within 24 hours and does not interfere with normal activities. Redness may last longer in some cases, but it will still be mild and temporary. The redness of the skin will usually subside within 24 - 48 hours following the treatment.
Is treatment right for me?
Even though the perfect patient is fair-skinned and has dark hair, there is good evidence to show that, with carefully researched settings, positive results can be achieved for different hair and skin types. The darker the hair, the more easily it can be treated, as darker hair contains more melanin and is easier to heat up. Hair with less melanin is more difficult to treat. The treatment may not be as effective for gray or white hair as it lacks melanin.
Do I have to let the hair grow out prior to the treatment?
It is best to shave the area clean before using IPL to achieve the best results for hair removal. You must refrain from waxing, tweezing, and depilatories before having IPL hair treatments. You will be able to shave the area site during the course of treatment, allowing you to remain hairless.
Do you offer a consultation and patch test?
We provide patients with a consultation in which our therapists explore treatment options and results. As well, a patch test can be done if your therapist thinks it is appropriate - for example, if you have Fitzpatrick 3 or higher skin, the Therapist will typically patch test the area.
A full consultation will be provided prior to any treatment. The consultation identifies your expectations and explains all aspects of the treatment.
Upon receiving a medical history to determine suitability for treatment, the patient is asked for an informed consent in writing.
